An Organized Closet

No more wardrobe wars: how to cut back your closet

We’ve all been there. You are standing in or in front of your closet staring at your clothes thinking again, “I have nothing to wear.” Most of the time it’s not really a lack of choices, it’s the fact that you have too many choices. My favorite shirts get buried in between other shirts hanging up and sometimes I have to dig to find pants that actually fit. You can have a clean organized closet with easy access to all the clothes you want to wear just by following a few simple tips.

Hide ‘Em Clothes that are either a size too small or are out of season I store in plastic storage bins marked with what they are (labels like “Size 4 Pants” and “Winter Sweaters”). These storage containers are for clothes that I may want to (or be able to wear) in the future, so I don’t want to completely get rid of them, but I don’t want those size 4’s staring me in the face every day.

Purge After you separate the clothes that you still like but are not practical, it’s time to get real about the rest of the clothing. A good rule is to turn all of your hangers the opposite way on the rack. Then as you do laundry and put clothing back put the hanger the right way. In about six months if there are still hangers facing the wrong way, you know that you probably will not be wearing those clothes any time soon and it’s time to get rid of them. I also like to keep a separate bin for clothes that I don’t typically hang-up that I don’t think I’ll wear, but haven’t quite been able to throw away yet. If I haven’t gotten into the bin in six months it’s time to toss. The label on this bin can be the “toss date”.

Shoe Racks or Cubbies The bottom of the closet can become an endless pile of shoes if you aren’t careful. Having a spot for each pair will really help you to be able to see your shoes and stop the digging!
Now that you have eliminated all of the things that you definitely AREN’T going to wear from your closet, your choices become so much clearer. Put on your favorite outfit and feel confident about your choices!

@Sharon M When you turn your hangers backward use a certain color label for each month of the year & stick it on the hanger when you hang an item up. Keep a master list of which color is which month & you'll always know how long that item has been in your closet! Or you could use color coded hanging tags to hang on the hanger.

Moths and other insects don't like lavendar. Try that scent in soaps or other items that you can leave open in your closet.

I do the hangers turned around, but forget how long they have been there. I do like the ideal of storing in totes. I may do that. The info didn't mention space saving for your closet? Need more comments and ideals.
