Materials

  • Small colorful handbag decorated with beads, sequins, pearls, etc.
  • Sharp knife
  • Floral foam
  • Ziploc® Brand Sandwich Bag
  • Double-stick tape
  • Ivy and/or leafy branches
  • Brightly colored flowers to complement or match the colors on the bag (i.e., dendrobium orchids, mums, carnations, etc.)

Instructions

step 1 Cut floral foam to slightly smaller than inside area of handbag so it will fit inside comfortably. Be sure foam is tall enough to almost reach top edge of bag.
step 2 Soak foam in water for about 30 minutes.
step 3 Line inside of handbag with Ziploc® Brand Sandwich Bag to keep from damaging fabric. Cut sandwich bag so that edge of plastic does not go beyond top edge of bag and secure it to the inside edge of purse with double-stick tape.
step 4 Place floral foam inside plastic-lined handbag.
step 5 Hold flowers next to purse before cutting to measure desired length.
step 6 Cut flower stems with sharp knife on 45-degree angle to help force stems into floral foam. (For less sturdy stems, use a pencil or thin object like a knitting needle to preform a hole so you can easily push stems in without damaging.)
step 7 When inserting stems, be careful not to push sharp edge of stems through plastic bag, to prevent water from leaking through.
step 8 Start with ivy or small leafy branches around edge of bag and then add smaller blooms.
step 9 Continue with larger blossoms and then the largest, checking arrangement as you add new flowers.
step 10Finish by inserting any remaining greenery or smaller blooms where needed to fill in spare areas.
step 11Add fresh water to keep floral foam moist and flowers fresh.

I used a Ziploc Freezer Bag rather than a sandwich bag. It is sturdier and harder to accidently puncture. I did use a sandwich bag with artificial flowers.
