For the jar:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

To assemble the gift jar

step 1Wash and thoroughly dry a 1-quart wide-mouth canning jar.
step 2Layer the ingredients in the jar as listed above, starting with the sugar on the bottom, then flour, cranberries, ginger, baking powder, baking soda and finally salt. Press each ingredient layer firmly into place with a flat-bottomed object (like a large plastic cup) before adding the next.
step 3Secure the lid and download our recipe card that shares instructions for baking the muffins.
step 4For those of you making this at home, download the recipe card for instructions (including oven temp) and wet ingredients, however, here’s a list of the wet ingredients for planning:
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

You can also use a thoroughly washed Mason jar, old mayonnaise or large jelly jar. Decorative or vintage jars from a specialty or antique store make a great keepsake after the muffin mix is used up. (Make sure they are food safe and thoroughly washed.)

If you go to the CHOCOLATE CHERRY OATMEAL SCONES, there is a "Chef's Notes" has the instructions on how to substitute Buttermilk.

You can get dry buttermilk mix which is a fairly inexpensive way to have it on hand.

Not everyone has buttermilk and a use for all of it. Can you suggest a substitute or instructions on how to make from milk vinegar/lemon juice, I forget which. Budgets are thin and gifts should be easy to use. Thank you.

Laurie and Dorey - not sure why you are having difficulty with the recipe card? It is located on the right side of the page and takes just a second to load (must have Adobe on your computer).

This sounds like a wonderful recipe except there is not a recipe card to be printed at all. Sure it wouldn't be hard to figure out, but would be nice to have to pass along with the gift!
