Materials

  • Computer and printer, plus 1 sheet of paper
  • Downloaded templates
  • Scissors
  • Two foam sheets, 7" x 7" each, in contrasting colors (yellow and green shown here)
  • Cutting board
  • Utility knife
  • Foam glue
  • Photograph
  • Adhesive magnetic sheeting, 3" x 2"
  • Straightedge or ruler
  • Assorted stick-on tokens

Optional:
Felt-tipped pen

Instructions

step 1Download the two star templates onto your computer and print them. Cut out each star along the outline. Carefully cut out the circle inside each star.
step 2Choose two contrasting colors of foam sheets and place a template on each sheet. Place a cutting board underneath. Using a utility knife, cut around the edges of each star. Carefully cut out the inside circles. (Note: make sure you cut firmly enough to cut through the foam.)
step 3Place the two foam stars together, placing the star with the smaller hole on the bottom (so that it will slightly peek through the circle of the star on top). Make sure that you perfectly center the larger hole over the smaller one. Also, offset the tips of the two stars so that they are equidistant from tip to tip. When you're satisfied with the position, glue together.
step 4Choose an appropriate-sized photograph so that the image will fit within the smaller circle. (Note: make sure that the diameter of the picture is at least one-half inch wider than the smaller circle so that it can be glued to the back of the stars.)
step 5Glue the photo to the back of the bottom star. (Avoid using too much glue or it will run over the photo.)
step 6Cut a piece of magnet approximately 3 inches by 2 inches. Peel off the paper to expose the adhesive and stick onto the back of your photograph.
step 7Leave the frame unadorned or be creative and add stick-on tokens to decorate the stars. If you choose a photograph with colors that accentuate the colors of your stars, the impact will be greater.
