Materials

  • Six 6 x 9-inch pieces of foam (or the number of compartments on the sweater bag you buy)
  • Foam alphabet pieces (precut, available in plastic tubs or bags)*
  • Hole puncher
  • Glue
  • Hanging sweater bag with six compartments (found in popular home goods stores)
  • Pipe cleaners or plastic lacing string (used to make lanyards)

Optional
  • Marking pen
  • Rubber stamps
  • Stickers

Instructions

step 1Cut six foam pieces into 2 3/4 x 9 inch rectangles. Trim the edges to round them off. (Make sure this size fits the compartments of your particular hanging sweater bag. Adjust to fit.)
step 2Punch two holes in either side of the rectangle.
step 3You can spell out the name of the activity: dance, soccer, riding, etc. (Or, alternately, spell out each day of the week.) You can also use paint, rubber stamps, stickers, etc. on the foam piece to spell out the letters or to embellish or decorate afterward.
step 4Punch two holes in the sweater bag on either side of each compartment to hang each tag. Some bags have plastic pieces sewn into the rim edge for support. Punch the holes behind that rim. (If the sweater bag is canvas, you may have to use a leather punch to make the holes through it.)
step 5Secure the tag to the hanging bag with pipe cleaners or the plastic string.
step 6Once you assemble this bag, all your child has to do in the morning is check the label, grab the right clothes and toss them in the backpack.

*Many foam letters have a sticky backing that you just peel off, making this craft even simpler to accomplish.
